Joan Brix Carter e-Library Dedicated to a Lifetime of Faith and Art

The Elkins School of Art is pleased to announce the dedication of the Joan Brix Carter e-Library, a digital platform established in honor of Dr. Joan Brix Carter and her lifelong devotion to integrating Christian faith with artistic excellence.

The e-library stands as a living tribute to Dr. Carter’s decades of teaching, mentorship, and leadership in arts education. Reimagined as a digital resource, it serves as a beacon of inspiration for Christian artists, designers, and architects around the world—providing a virtual space for study, reflection, and creative growth.

A Legacy Celebrated

The dedication ceremony for the Joan Brix Carter Library took place on April 27, 2024, at the Kitsap Golf Country Club in Bremerton, Washington. The event brought together colleagues, students, and longtime supporters to honor Dr. Carter’s remarkable contributions. Heartfelt tributes, an a cappella choir performance, and a commemorative video featuring messages from former students and faculty captured the depth of her impact on generations of Christian artists.

Dr. Carter was presented with a plaque, a certificate of appreciation, and meaningful gifts in recognition of her service and mentorship. Many expressed that her influence continues to shape lives and creative callings across the world.

A Vision for Future Generations

In her remarks, Dr. Carter gave thanks to the Lord for guiding her journey and encouraged young artists to see their creative work as an act of worship. She reminded them that true excellence in art comes from both mastery of craft and the pursuit of spiritual truth.

A Global Platform for Creative Growth

More than a digital library, the Joan Brix Carter e-Library is envisioned as a dynamic educational platform offering access to books, design archives, and theological resources. It will host virtual workshops, lectures, and exhibitions that celebrate Christian creativity and its power to shape culture.

Through this initiative, Elkins School of Art seeks to carry forward Dr. Carter’s vision—to nurture a new generation of artists and architects who will glorify God through their gifts, uniting faith, creativity, and purpose in every work they create.
